Over fifteen years of producing music and touring regularly, Adelaide producer Strict Face has quietly left his mark on the Australian landscape of underground dance music, establishing unexpected connections between contemporary electronic music and its predecessors.
Having cut his teeth in the world of instrumental grime during its second wave in the early 10s, his music caught the attention of Mumdance and Mr. Mitch, who went on to release his early work on their Different Circles and Gobstopper labels respectively, while a tour throughout the UK and Europe in 2016 helped cement his place as a producer and DJ to watch.
Upon its inception in 2015, Nina Las Vegas drafted him to join the ranks of her label NLV Records, resulting in a fruitful working partnership that’s continued to this day. The run of releases under the label mapped out the producer’s ever-developing craft, shifting from momentary flirts with pop/R&B production (2017’s This Heat EP and 2018’s New Racer mixtape) to the heady, no-holds-barred approach to club music he’s gained a notoriety for in recent years (2021’s Pulsers and 2022’s Focus, Explode), bolstered by equally-rambunctious DJ sets at the label’s parties throughout its history.
Post-pandemic years have seen him cast a wider net with his sound, with 2024’s Thirst For Nerve EP (released under the SLG International imprint which he co-runs) dealing in frantic drum programming inspired by the British hardcore continuum, Detroit techno and early 80s no wave in equal measure, and his debut album Severe Forward (2025, on his Heuristic imprint) revealing its roots in a merger of modular techno and the British hardcore continuum. Having weathered an ever-changing clubbing landscape to leave his own stamp, it’s unlikely the inspiration he finds around him will be in short supply any time soon.
Previous lives have seen him behind the boards (albeit remotely) for Le1f, Cakes Da Killa and Cadence Weapon, while Vv Pete and Dawn Richard have both had their music re-shaped under his idiosyncratic ear for production.
Strict Face’s music has gotten the seal of approval from selectors as varied as DJ Plead, Jamz Supernova, Skrillex and Lena Willikens over the years. Meanwhile, the ever-growing list of names he’s shared a DJ booth with – Ben UFO, Chloé Robinson, Eris Drew, Massimiliano Pagliara, Jossy Mitsu and Special Request, to name just a handful – speaks to his versatility as a selector himself, and the notches on his radio belt are no less strong, having graced the studios of NTS, Rinse FM, FBi Radio and triple j and being part of the team behind Adelaide community station duck! Radio.
